TRES es una colectiva de arte basado en investigación fundado en 2009, Ciudad de México, comprometidas con los ecosistemas críticos y las implicaciones socio territoriales de lo residual. Exploran las asociaciones entre humanos y más-que-humanos, y su curiosidad se ha centrado en la indagación de la basura como un residuo socio(est)ético que conlleva implicaciones políticas, biológicas y materiales. Su práctica artística se concentra en el entrelazamiento y diálogo metodológico con la ciencia, la antropología y la arqueología, entre otros saberes.
Se consideran pepenadores de ficciones materiales.
Exploran en los desechos su capacidad de guardar información material, económica y simbólica que a su vez funciona para elaborar un retrato individual o colectivo socioambiental. La basura se convierte en metáfora de todo lo que dejamos de lado, olvidado. TRES explora, desde distintos conocimientos situados, una narrativa de todo lo que decidimos no ver. Un área fundamental de su trabajo colectivo son sus frecuentes caminatas sin destino específico, derivas para encontrar basura, objetos acumulados y ensamblajes residuales.
Tenemos una fijación por la basura, la acumulación de objetos, los desechos, y nuestra mirada se atrapa siempre alrededor de esos temas cuando estamos caminando. La visión del pepenador nos ha dotado de una estética específica cuando nos comunicamos y relacionamos con el espacio.
En el 2016 fueron otorgados del Robert Gardner Fellowship of Fotography del Peabody Museum en Harvard. Sus obras han sido expuestas en la Bienal Metrópolis 2009 (Dinamarca), la sección de arte público del 25 Festival de México en el Centro Histórico (Ciudad de México), en Amsterdam Global City #2: Mexico, WCA World Cinema (Holanda), en ViBGYOR International Film Festival en Kerala, India, Transitio MX_05 en Ciudad de México, entre otros. De manera individual sus trabajos se han mostrado en más de 20 exposiciones en América Latina y Europa.

boltvinik studied visual art at “La Esmeralda”, and her PhD in social sciences at UAM-C (Mexico City). She was a residente at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (Amsterdam, 2000-2001). She was awarded a special honor in the XII Biennale of Photography (Mexico City), and she has been part of the National System of Creators grant (SNCA, Mexico 2018-2020; and 2022-2024).
rodrigo viñas
viñas studied art theory at Universidad del Claustro, and his postgraduate studies in visual arts at UNAM (Mexico City) and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain). He was also part of the Seminar of Contemporary Photography, Centro de la Imagen (Mexico City), and had the National System of Arts Grant (SNCA, Mexico 2021-2023).

TRES (ilana boltvinik + rodrigo viñas, Mexico City) is an art-research duo founded in Mexico City, 2009. We are engaged with critical ecosystems and the socio-territorial implications of the residual. Focused on exploring the associations between humans and more-than-humans, our curiosity has centered on the inquiry of garbage as a socio(aesth)etical residue that entails political, biological, and material implications.
One fundamental area of our work is the methodological intertwining and the dialogue with science, anthropology, and archaeology among other situated knowledges. By designing social counter-cartographies and participatory practices, TRES explores narratives of all we choose not to see. Our artistic practice is meant to investigate micro and macro phenomena of waste assemblies that entangle human and more-than-human agencies. Through multiple collaborations we enjoy opening critical spaces that question the understanding we have of urban ecologies.
As garbologists and artists, we have always been obsessed in the B-side of socio-technical systems. For us, waste is information, of hegemonic practices, but also of untold or hidden narratives. When we first started our practice-based research it was grounded on specific, local refuse. We now explore global patterns of discard and distribution, intertwining scales and space. After multi-sited and multi-format research, we translate our findings into socio-aesthetical installations.
TRES was Pollock-Krasner Foundation grantee (2019) and Robert Gardner Fellowship in Photography of the Peabody Museum, Harvard University (2016). In 2015 they won the WMA Commission for the first Ubiquitous Trash project in Hong Kong. The outcome: a book and exhibition that explores the global mobility of marine debris. In 2014, the festival Abandon Normal Devices (AND) commissioned TRES to produce Rough Fish, a mobile pervasive game (UK). Their works have been shown in America, Europe and Asia. TRES represented Mexico in the 13th Biennale of La Havana (2019), and have presented in Festival Transitio MX_05 Bio mediations (Mexico, 2013); ViBGYOR International Film Festival (India, 2010); Metropolis Biennale (Denmark, 2009); in the XXV Festival of Mexico (Mexico, 2009), among others.
